The Ultimate First Timer’s Guide to Los Angeles

Nothing beats that feeling of stepping out of LAX into the City of Angels for the first time. The palm trees, the convertibles blasting music with the top down, the ocean air. Welcome to Los Angeles.

It’s a sprawling, vibrant city known for its entertainment industry, stunning beaches, diverse culture, and endless sunshine. As a first-timer, you’ll quickly realize that LA is more than just Hollywood—it’s a collection of eclectic neighborhoods, each offering its own unique vibe and attractions. Whether you’re an art lover, foodie, outdoor enthusiast, or beachgoer, LA has something for everyone.

But no doubt, LA’s size and notorious traffic can be daunting. That’s why it’s essential to plan your trip carefully to make the most of your time. Here’s just about everything you need to know to make the most of your trip to the City of Angels.

Getting around LA

In a city the size of LA, it’s important to plan out how you’ll get around and budget accordingly.

Renting a car is often the most convenient option if you’re traveling solo or as a couple, especially if you plan to visit multiple neighborhoods. Keep in mind that traffic can be heavy, particularly during rush hour, so plan your routes ahead of time and try to avoid peak travel times.

Ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft are widely available in LA and can be more convenient than public transportation. They’re great for short trips or nights out when you don’t want to worry about parking. Just be prepared for surge pricing during high-demand times.

While LA is known for being car-centric, some neighborhoods like Venice, Santa Monica, and Downtown LA are actually quite walkable and bike-friendly. Santa Monica, in particular, has great bike paths along the beach, and you can rent bikes easily.

If you’re traveling with a group, reserve a Los Angeles charter bus to keep everyone together. It’s a stress-free option for groups heading to attractions, events, or even day trips outside of the city.

Best times to visit

There’s never a bad time to visit LA. This city is known for its near-perfect weather year-round. Expect mild winters and hot summers, with most days offering clear skies and sunshine.

Fall and spring are the best times to visit LA, as temperatures are comfortable and crowds are more manageable. You’ll find fewer tourists at major attractions, and the weather is ideal for outdoor shopping and beach trips.

Neighborhoods to explore

It’s nearly impossible to explore all of Los Angeles in less than a week. Instead, 2-3 neighborhoods that you’re especially interested in, and really soak in the experience for a day or two. That way you’ll get below the surface-level tourist experience, and start to see LA the way locals do.

Hollywood

The first neighborhood on everyone’s list is, of course, Hollywood. In addition to Hollywood Boulevard, you can plan to catch a movie at the historic TCL Chinese Theatre and take a selfie in front of the famous Hollywood sign. The area is touristy but essential for a first-time visit.

Downtown

Downtown LA is a blend of old and new, offering everything from historic architecture to modern skyscrapers. Make time to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art, and when you’re ready for a bite, stop by the Grand Central Market for a variety of crowd-pleasing fare.

Venice Beach and Santa Monica

For a quintessential LA beach experience, head to Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Venice offers an eclectic boardwalk scene with street performers, shops, and the famous Muscle Beach. Nearby, Santa Monica comes with a different vibe but equally iconic spots to explore, including the famous Santa Monica Pier and beachfront restaurants.

Beverly Hills

Known for its upscale shopping on Rodeo Drive and luxurious homes, Beverly Hills offers a glimpse into LA’s high life. Take a stroll through the palm tree-lined streets, visit the Beverly Gardens Park, and keep an eye out for celebrity sightings.

Koreatown

For a taste of LA’s diverse culture, head to Koreatown. You’ll find some of the best Korean BBQ in the city, and you can follow it up with a night out on the town. You’ll get to experience Korean culture and cuisine, and see a whole different side of LA.

Top LA attractions

Once you’ve walked around Venice Beach and gotten your photo op with the Hollywood sign, choose a couple of these pit stops. They’re touristy, but they’re sought-out for a reason.

Griffith Observatory

You don’t have to be a space nerd to enjoy the observatory. Views through the telescope are free. Visit during the day to take in the impressive views of LA, or at night to get a new appreciation for the night sky.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

LA is home to a number of museums, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is one of the most sought-after. It’s a welcome break from the throngs of people, and you’ll get the chance to learn about a wide range of art from various cultures and periods. This museum is equally appealing to serious art enthusiasts and casual tourists alike.

Universal Studios

Families with kids will be sure to seek out the famous Universal Studios Hollywood; but you don’t have to have kiddos to appreciate this day trip. Take a ride on one of the many theme park rides, or tour a movie studio. When you’re ready for lunch, there are plenty of highly rated restaurants to choose from. You can easily spend a day or even a weekend at Universal Studios.

Venice Canal Historic District

For a more tranquil escape, visit the Venice Canals. The lush greenery, water views, and beautiful homes are enough to capture anyone’s attention for a couple of hours. It’s a welcome break from the faster pace of downtown LA, theme parks and tourist traps.

Where to eat

Los Angeles is a food lover’s paradise. Whether you’re craving tacos, fresh sushi, or a one-of-a-kind meal at a Michelin star restaurant, you’ll find it in LA.

LA is known for its array of quirky food trucks and street vendors, so be sure to sample a variety of street food as you’re strolling around. You’ll find classic Americana bites as well as plenty of fresh seafood and Asian-fusion.

If you’re open to higher-end options, the City of Angels also claims some of the most famous restaurants and head chefs in the country. If you’re up for a meal at one of the top restaurants in the city, like Redbird or San Laurel, be sure to make your reservations well in advance.

Of course, there are plenty of amazing restaurants in every neighborhood of LA. Whatever you’re craving, you’re sure to find it – and it’ll probably well exceed your expectations.
